Established in June 2023, Vuurtoren, L.L.C. provides expert advice and support to help organizations successfully navigate their way to solutions. Chief Executive Officer, Brian McKenna, specializes in strategic planning and organizational development; event planning and facilitation; and global public health market analysis, technical report writing and project management.
Clients include Population Services International (PSI), the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), i+ solutions, Western Washington University, and - in collaboration with Mann Global Health (MGH) - the International Rescue Committee (IRC).
From 2014-2023, Brian was the Deputy Director of the RHSC, a partnership of 500+ public entities, private corporations, and NGOs working together to ensure that everyone in LMICs can access and use affordable, high-quality RH supplies. In his role, he was responsible for co-managing the operations of the global Secretariat including strategy development and execution, fundraising and grant writing, external representation and public speaking. He supervised technical staff responsible for implementing global and regional initiatives focused on supply chain management, market dynamics and advocacy. Brian also led private sector and European partner engagement as well as the RHSC’s operations in francophone Africa, and he directed the planning of the organization’s annual General Membership Meeting which hosts 300+ participants from more than 50 countries and takes place in a different city each year including Kathmandu in 2019, Brussels in 2018, Seattle in 2016, Oslo in 2015, and Mexico City in 2014.
Prior to joining the Coalition in June 2014, Brian worked for 11 years for PSI. This included serving as the Country Director in Madagascar, a program which had a $20 million annual budget from multiple donors and 300+ employees. During his tenure, he revitalized and strengthened the 10-year-old program with a new strategic plan, organizational restructuring and streamlined internal systems. Upon completion of this position, Brian was promoted to be the Deputy Director of the Southern Africa region where he co-supervised a multi-country portfolio with a $130 million annual operating budget and led the transition of a large-scale regional NGO project to a profitable commercial business which continues to grow year-on-year and serves as a model for similar operations in other regions. Based on his experience, he was invited to serve as a member of the global PSI strategic planning committee.
A dual citizen of the US and Belgium, Brian holds a master’s degree in international affairs and economics from the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS), and he was a Peace Corps Volunteer in Guinea, West Africa.
